Alongside my recording and music production work, I also do some other artistic projects involving music, sound, light, visuals and environments…

A Cabinet of Future Ghosts

My latest collaboration with Haiku Salut is a digital sculptural work, which blends music I produced for the band with the ghostly projections, which evolved from our work on the Occupy virtual reality experience, and a beautifully crafted diorama. Touring the UK in 2021 as part of the Super Cool Drawing Machine: The Musician’s Art Show.

Supported by Arts Council England

Previous projects

For Vestige, Robin developed some new techniques regarding the flow of music within a temporally variable experience but also I think he’s really pushed the capabilities of audio as a tool to compose the viewer and curate movement within the experience.
— Director Aaron Bradbury, interviewed by Nathan Ortega for Viveport

Vestige / Fragments

I created the sound design and music implementation (alongside composer Starkey) for the award-winning, virtual reality experience, Vestige and its companion piece, Fragments for Magic Leap. Featured at The Tribeca Film Festival, Sheffield Doc-Fest & SXSW and recognised with multiple awards including Best Soundtrack at the 2019 Espinho Immersive Film Festival.

Occupy

A virtual reality music video created by myself and Aaron Bradbury to accompany the release of the single by Haiku Salut. Taken from the album There Is No Elsewhere which I produced, the video recreates elements of The Lamp Show and the themes of the album. A place, but no specific time. A collision of moments, in which the viewer becomes another ghostly explorer.

Their latest warms the electronic pot with quirky pastoralism—brass, melodica, clattering-teacup percussion and tangible emotional warmth.

Virgil - A Lament for Mr Conway

Commissioned for QUAD as part of the Acquisition exhibition, exploring the Grand Tour and the influence of scientific discovery on culture. This generative AI-based composer responds to real-time sensor data, influenced by the time of day, the weather and the activities of its audience, the visitors themselves.

The Lamp Show - Haiku Salut

A touring show I created with Haiku Salut, The Lamp Show uses the musical data generated by the band’s performance to bring a collection of vintage lamps to life, bringing light to venues, audiences and the band themselves.

Recently this technology was adapted to incorporate lights into the bands BFI funded tour, soundtracking the Buster Keaton silent classic, The General.

Night Sun

Night Sun is a story told by the turn of a music-box handle. An interactive audio/visual installation, featuring music by Richard J. Birkin as well as a specially commissioned story (by Emma Lannie) and photos (by Dan Wheeler) to accompany the piece.

Commissioned by Nottingham City Council for Light Night 2014, funded by Arts Council England.

V.01

An interactive audio and video installation that could be manipulated by the public. Via a sculptural control panel visitors were invited to create new compositions that used fully controllable large scale projections and original moving image samples along with a manipulated soundtrack.
